What is HIPAA?

HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. It became law in 1996 and aims to protect both the American health insurance consumer and their health information.

What is HIPAA?HIPAA is made up of five parts. The first allows American workers to transfer and continue receiving health insurance coverage when they change jobs or lose their jobs. It also prohibits health insurance companies from denying coverage for specific diseases and pre-existing conditions, and it prevents companies from setting lifetime limits.

The second part asks the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to set standards for processing electronic healthcare transactions and protecting patient health information. Most people referring to HIPAA are referring to the protection of the privacy of an individual’s health information, which in essence states that not just anyone can access an individual’s health records. It allows patients to keep their health records private and decide who can see their records.

The last three parts of HIPAA are for tax-related health provisions, application/enforcement of group health plan requirements, and revenue offsets. Revenue offsets refers to company-owned life insurance and how to treat those who lose citizenship for income tax purposes.

Initially the main goals of HIPAA were to protect the American worker’s health insurance and to reduce fraud, waste and abuse of the health insurance and healthcare delivery.

Since HIPAA was introduced in 1996, it has been updated several times, sometimes to account for technological changes. For instance, in 2009 a requirement was added that health insurance companies and health service providers have to notify individuals that their health information was breached in the case of a data breach.

What this means is that Watson Imaging Center is dedicated to protecting your health information and ensuring it goes only to the people you have agreed can see it. It means that not even your doctor can see records of your exams at Watson Imaging Center unless you specifically allow it. Even though medical records are more and more connected in the digital age, you the patient are in control of who sees those records and Watson Imaging Center is committed to maintaining your privacy.
