Diagnostic Imaging and Medicare Part B Insurance

We accept many different types of health care insurance, including Medicare Part B. If you have Medicare Part B, says it covers medically necessary services and preventive services.

What that means is that Medicare Part B covers diagnostic medical imaging tests when your doctor or healthcare provider orders them. Medicare also covers some medical imaging screening tests, such as abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, bone density measurements, lung cancer screening, and screening mammography.

Medicare has specific guidelines for the types of diagnostic medical imaging tests it covers. They follow the guidelines of federal and state laws, national coverage decisions made by Medicare about whether something is covered, and local coverage decisions made by companies in each state that process claims for Medicare. These companies decide whether something is medically necessary and should be covered in their area.

Each covered person’s situation is unique and therefore costs will be different for each person, based on whether you have other insurance in addition to Medicare, for example. If your doctor orders a diagnostic test for you, including a mammography screening, you can call us to find out what the cost of the test would be to you. According to Medicare guidelines, you pay 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount for covered diagnostic imaging tests performed in a non-hospital imaging facility. At a non-hospital imaging center like Watson Imaging Center, you won’t also be responsible for a co-payment, unlike for medical imaging tests performed in a hospital setting.

Calling us will give you the information to know if Medicare Part B covers the test your physician ordered and what the cost is to you.
