Getting the Most Out of Your Insurance Coverage

We’re already part way into a new year, and now is the perfect time to plan to get the most out of your health insurance.

Every year it is a good idea to check to see if there have been any changes to what your health insurance covers. This is especially true if you change health insurance provider from one year to the next, but even if you keep the same health insurance, your coverage may change.

Knowing what your health insurance covers can help you plan for your health care needs over the course of the next year. Since the end of the year is a common time for people to see physicians, especially if they have already met their maximum deductibles and out-of-pocket costs, it means getting an appointment with a physician, any necessary exams, and any follow-up care could be difficult because no appointments are available.

Appointments fill up fastest for health care professionals who offer the lowest-cost care, usually because of the facility at which the care is being offered. For example, if you need a diagnostic imaging test, it is cheaper to have that test done at an independent imaging facility like Watson Imaging Center rather than at a hospital. Hospitals have higher overhead fees and health insurance companies pass some or all of this cost on to the covered individual. If you wait too long to get a test performed, you could be faced with either having the test done at a more expensive location or waiting for the next year, when you need to meet a new deductible and out-of-pocket maximum.

Once you have a diagnostic test performed, if there is follow-up care required, you face the same issue: you may have to pay more for the care or you may be unable to find any appointments in the same calendar year as you had the diagnosis.

The right thing to do is to see your physician earlier in the year so you can take the necessary steps to get the care you need at the lowest price to you, in the same year, to reduce your overall out-of-pocket costs.

Having tests, even routine ones, done early will give you peace of mind knowing if more care is needed, you started early. And if you should need a diagnostic imaging test, give us a call to schedule an appointment.
